It's no secret that the glory of rock stardom -- traveling the world, legions of obsessed fans, the trashed hotel rooms -- overshadows the depressing lows. Rock n' roll has always been about the care free attitude of invincibility, not risk mitigation. As Andrew W.K. so eloquently once put "When it's time to party we will always party hard"!

Alternative singer-songwriter Mike Doughty doesn't see it that way.  The former Soul Coughing front man understands that sometimes the tales of rock bottom can be just as inspirational as those from the top. That's why at some point last year, Doughty put down the guitar and picked up a pen, typewriter, computer and wrote a memoir, aptly titled The Book of Drugs. Using humor and an authentic knack for storytelling, doughty brings us into the most depressing points of his life and still leave us with a smile. You'll can sample this gleefully dark composition when Doughty makes an appearance at Elliot Bay Books in Capitol Hill at 5 pm for a public reading.

And because a book appearance isn't good enough for this workaholic, Doughty will also be playing a show at The Triple Door later. It will be an intimate performance that will include readings from his book, audience interaction and songs that span his career.
